11 Oaxaca deaths being blamed on Tropical Storm Vicente

Oaxaca — The National Meteorological Service reported that as of Sunday, Willa officially became a category four hurricane with Civil Protection in Oaxaca saying tropical storm Vicente has already claimed 11 lives.

According to the agency, Willa is southwest of Playa Perula, Jalisco with maximum sustained winds of 215 kilometers per hour. Together with Tropical Storm Vicente, strong rains are expected in Guerrero over the next several hours for which Civil Protection called for preventive measures.

According to the State Coordination of Civil Protection, over the past three days, 11 deaths have been blamed on Tropical Storm Vicente. From Thursday, October 18 to Sunday, October 21, seven minors and four adults lost their lives due to the torrential rains from the storm’s passage through Oaxaca.

They report that a 15-year-old teenager and a child of two died, both buried by a landslide that covered their house in the community of San Francisco Jayacaxtepec in the municipality of Totontepec Villa de Morelos in the Sierra Norte.

In the community of La Reforma in the municipality of San Pedro Mixtepec in the Costa region, a 6-year-old girl died.

The state government ordered the suspension of classes on Monday in 147 municipalities.
