Albino whale spotted in Mexican waters, second in a decade

Baja California Sur, Mexico — A rare sighting of an albino whale was made off the coast of Baja California Sur, making it the second sighting in a decade.

In a video posted by Manuel González, the albino whale was recorded in the waters March 3 off the coast in what environmental officials are calling highly unusual. Although it is whale sighting season, officials still say the sighting of the albino is very rare.

Between 2008 and 2009, la Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (Conanp) were notified of the sighting of an albino whale in the area. That whale was named Galón de Leche.

In February 2017, the agency reported that Galón de Leche gave birth in the municipality of Mulegé. The baby was named Costalito de Sal.
