American man dies after being allegedly beaten in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco — An American man has died after being allegedly beaten in the popular seaside resort city of Puerto Vallarta.

According to unverified American reports, the man died Wednesday in an Alabama hospital after being flown to the US from Mexico for better medical treatment.

Reports say the American was Dr. William O’Byrne, an anesthesiologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he was an  intensive care specialist. Apparently O’Byrne was on vacation in Puerto Vallarta with friends.

According to friend Jason Hall, O’Byrne became separated from the group and was later found at a local Puerto Vallarta hospital. He told CBS 42 that the doctor was connected to a respirator, and that he had been beaten and left in a ditch.

Jason Hall also said, “Hopefully the appropriate authorities will be able to work with the Mexican government and other jurisdictions to find out what happened.”

The 54-year-old American was flown back to the US with life support, but later died of his injuries.

The hospital issued a statement in which it reported that “at the request of the family, we have been asked not to disclose more information.” The US Embassy in Mexico told AL.com that they are aware of the case and are gathering more information.
