Tulum, Quintana Roo — A teenage boy was the victim of a hit and run Friday when he left the area he was visiting to run to a nearby store.
The boy, a 13-year-old from Yucatan, was riding his bicycle along the Tulum highway when the accident occurred. Witnesses say the young teen was riding when the driver of a car hit him and fled. The boy’s mother said her son had just left the ranch they were staying at to run to the store, which was on the same side of the road as where they were staying.
That was when she heard a thunderous blow before seeing her son lying on the road.
The driver of the vehicle did not stop, but instead, kept driving. While the mother was not able to provide a description of the vehicle, others saw the accident and were able to provide details.
Police arrested the driver of the car 40 kilometers away in the town of Coba outside Tulum.
The mother said she and her son had arrived to spend the weekend with her husband, who is also the child’s father.
