Christmas trees ready for sale around Mexico

Mexico City, Mexico — Commercial Christmas trees are about to hit the local market, says the National Forestry Commission, who notes that this year they anticipate the sale of 700,000 trees.

The National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR) says that for the month of December, they anticipate the sale of nearly 700,000 trees across the country, totaling nearly 350 million peso in sales.

According to CONAFOR there are 848 tree producers registered in Mexico, of which 155 will market their trees of appropriate age and size for the Christmas season.

The main producers of Christmas trees in Mexico are the State of Mexico, Guanajuato, Puebla, Michoacán, Veracruz, Tlaxcala and Mexico City. CONAFOR reports that at least seven different species will be sold as Christmas trees, the most common being Fir and White Pine.

According to figures reported by the producers, this year, Mexican trees will ranige in price from 250 to 1,000 peso depending on the type, size and place of purchase.

CONAFOR says that at the end of the season, old trees can be recycled for composting, so the carbon captured is not lost or emitted into the atmosphere, hence the importance of taking them to the collection centers.
