Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo — A dive boat from Mahahual has been documented dropping its anchor onto a coral reef, destroying a section that officials say, will take at least 50 years to grow back.
The boat was reported by local Mahahual businessmen after seeing the boat from Spanish company Pepe Dive Mahahual drop anchor in a reef area. The incident occurred November 2 when underwater patrols carried out an inspection to verify the condition of the reef.
Upon arrival, divers found large pieces of coral had been broken away from the reef. Locals say this is not an isolated incident.
Swords Iste of Grand Costa Maya, demanded that the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (Profepa) do an investigation and apply the corresponding sanctions because the reef takes 50 years to regenerate.
“There must be awareness of what happens in Mahahual,” he said adding, “It is an important area where the reefs are in front of us and we must all take care of it. If it is damaged, the tourist zone is damaged.”
“We want this to serve as an example and to reach the final consequences so that both foreigners and nationals know that this type of abuse against the environment will not be tolerated by the responsible civil society.”
