Former Mexico goalkeeper sentenced to 75 years

Monterrey, Nuevo León — The former goalkeeper of Rayados de Monterrey, Omar “El Gato” Ortiz , was sentenced to 75 years in prison for the crime of kidnapping after he was found guilty of participating in at least three cases that included one minor.

El Gato was arrested in January 2012 by the State Investigation Agency, where after, a judge ordered his formal imprisonment. He is currently serving time in the Cereso de Cadereyta in Nuevo León where four other accomplices, who were also convicted, are being held.

Ortiz was found guilty of the kidnapping of Armando Gómez, husband of singer Gloria Trevi in October 2011, in addition to a woman and her minor daughter.

Even though Ortiz, who is 42, was sentenced to 75 years, he will serve only 60 since that is the maximum prison length in the state of Nuevo León.
