Gang leader believed responsible for death of officers arrested

San Francisco del Rincón, Guanajuato — A man believed to be the leader of a gang that was behind the June 2017 attack that left four police agents dead, has been arrested in Guanajuato.

Elements of the Criminal Investigation Agency have arrested Gilberto Jacobo De Almonte in the municipality of San Francisco del Rincón. Jacobo De Almonte, who goes by the alias El Chacal (The Jackel), is believed to be the leader of a criminal organization operating in Guerrero.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, El Chacal was located and detained without violence or involvement of third parties. He has been arrested for organized crime as well as his involvement in the armed attack against police personnel in June of 2017. The attack left four agents dead.

The Attorney General of Guerrero has six arrest warrants listed for Jacobo De Almonte that include kidnapping and homicide. During his arrest, police found him carrying a weapon and crystal methane.

Authorities said that he would be transferred to facilities of the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Investigation into Organized Crime.

According to Security Cabinet, the Guerrero gang in which he is associated expanded their operation to an area in San Luis Potosí and Guanajuato where they tried to control the distribution of drugs as well as kidnappings and extortion.
