Gun powder plant explodes in Mexico state killing four

Jilotepec, Mexico — A plant explosion has left four dead and at least eight injured in Edomex when a gunpowder factory caught fire.

The explosion of three powder magazines located in the community of San Lorenzo, municipality of Jilotepec occurred early Friday morning.

According to reports, five emergency units of the Emergency Service of the State of Mexico (SUEM), as well as a rescue helicopter , among other relief and security corporations both municipal and state, were sent to the plant.

The accident was reported around 11:00 a.m. when neighbors heard a blast in an area where gunpowder was apparently handled, local police sources said. Elements of Civil Protection local and other municipalities went to provide first aid to those who were at that time working the pyrotechnics material.

The victims were transferred to the Jilotepec hospital and the Las Américas hospital in Ecatepec.

Rescuers continued to located others that may have been trapped in the collapsed rubble.
