Mexico’s La Costeña hoping to expand to Asia and beyond

Mexico City, Mexico — Food producer La Costeña says it will close 2017 with a growth of 12 percent and will invest several million peso in the expansion of its San Luis Potosí plant.

The company says they will expand 30 percent in the San Luis Potosí plant to increase production lines of bottled chiles, nopales, moles and tamales with investments “of many millions of peso”, said the general director of the company, Rafael Celorio.

“In the United States only sweets are sold, but we are in the certification process to send products to Chile, where great success is expected by the market of nostalgia,” said the general director of La Costeña.

Other areas of the company such as the sale of beans have also increased by 20 percent, while the sale of tamales remained stable.

Rafael Celorio explained that 85 percent of its sales come from Mexico with 15 percent from the export side, of which the United States represents 80 percent.

“What has been driving us most is exporting to other countries in Asia. We are in China, Japan. We are going to start exporting to Indonesia, and now we’re strengthen our presence with Australia and New Zealand.

“Tex Mex food was once fashionable, but now people are looking for authentic food Mexican,” he said.
