Man in botched Sonora bank robbery dies

Hermosillo, Sonora — A man who held a woman hostage for more than two hours during a botched bank robbery has died.

Emergency 911 received the call that a man had a woman hostage at a bank in Hermosillo. More than a dozen officers responded to the emergency. With the building surrounded, police spent nearly two hours trying to talk the man into releasing the woman.

During talks, police were able to subdue the man with a gunshot. According to police reports, the man died in hospital at 8:40 the following morning.

Elements of the Federal Police, the Ministerial Agency for Criminal Investigation (AMIC) of the Attorney General’s Office in the State (FGJE) and the Municipal Police responded to the initial call that came through at 11:00 a.m. Monday.

The woman was released unharmed.
