Veracruz, Veracruz — The mayor of a municipality in Verazruz has been shot dead, according to a local government report.
The mayor-elect of the municipality of Hidalgotitlán, Santana Cruz Bahena was shot dead at the door of his home Saturday the Attorney General of the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz reported.
Santana Cruz Bahena was the winner of the elections for municipal president of Hidalgotitlán in June.
According to authorities, he was allegedly shot dead by gangs dedicated to theft of fuel in the region. A report by the Prosecutor’s Office of Veracruz indicated that the mayor was attacked at the doors of his home by, according to witnesses, aggressors who wore similar uniforms of the Mexican army. They were also traveling in cargo vehicles.
Cruz Bahena would have taken possession of the mayor’s office on January 1 2018, which he would have occupied for the second time in 10 years.
