Mexican government warns of stolen hazardous material

Mexico City, Mexico — The National Coordination of Civil Protection of the Ministry of the Interior has issued an alert to the State Civil Protection Units of Guanajuato, Querétaro, Jalisco, Michoacán, San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes and Zacatecas, regarding a theft from a radioactive source.

The National Commission of Nuclear Safety and Safeguards announced the theft of a nuclear densimeter containing the radioactive sources AMERICIO-241 / BERILIO and CESIO – 137.

The theft occurred when the equipment was extracted from a vehicle owned by the company Geogrupo del Centro, S.A. de C.V., in Francisco Murguía Street No. 2, Community of Santa Ana del Conde, Municipality of León, Guanajuato, at approximately 09:00 hours February 8, 2018.

If this quantity of radioactive material is not shielded, it is not handled under conditions of technological safety or it is not protected with security from the physical point of view, it could injure those who come into contact with it.
