Guadalajara, Mexico — The death of Mexican writer Fernando del Paso Morante has been confirmed. Through a statement, the University of Guadalajara confirmed his death with a social media statement.
“This morning we said goodbye and regret the departure of the great Mexican writer, painter and diplomat Fernando Del Paso. We appreciate his legacy to literature among which José Trigo, Palinuro de México and Noticias del Imperio stand out.”
Del Paso was hospitalized the day before in Guadalajara where the International Book Fair was to be held.After hearing the news, Marisol Schulz, director of the International Book Fair of Guadalajara, expressed her condolences.
“I find out with tremendous sadness the death of the great Fernando del Paso. The whole Mexican literary universe is in mourning. All the FIL Guadalajara are in mourning. I am touched by this very sensitive loss that has hit me directly.”
Fernando del Paso Morante was born on April 1, 1935 in Mexico City and excelled as a writer, painter, diplomat and academic. His training includes studies in economics and literature at the Autonomous University of Mexico. He was awarded the Cervantes Prize 2015.
Del Paso Morante died November 14. He was 83.
