Mexico City, Mexico — Mexico’s president, Enrique Peña Nieto, tweeted a response to Donald Trump a message in both English and Spanish that Mexico will not pay for a wall. Ever.
The tweet comes after the US president rallied in what some are calling pre-campaign mode during a speech in Nashville, when he said Mexico will pay for a wall and they will like doing it.
Peña Nieto made it clear that, “President @realDonaldTrump: NO. Mexico will NEVER pay for a wall. Not now, not never. Sincerely, Mexico (all of us) (sic)”.
During his Tuesday speech in Tennessee, Trump said to the crowd, “In the end, Mexico will pay for the wall. They do absolutely nothing to prevent people from going through Mexico, Honduras and all these other countries … They do nothing to help us,” adding, “Mexico will pay for the wall and enjoy it.”
He explained that he needed about 700 miles of wall in the South border since some of the 2,000 miles already had natural barriers. He also criticized the Democrats in Congress for blocking additional funds for construction.
“Chuck and Nancy, they do not want the barrier. They want open borders,” he said. “They are more interested in caring for criminals than in caring for US citizens.”
When talking about NAFTA, Trump said the treaty is horrible and the US loses more than $100 billion dollars a year.
“I don’t want to cause a problem. I don’t want to cause it. But, in the end, in the end, Mexico is going to pay for the wall,” he said. “They do nothing to help us. Nothing. They are going to pay for the wall and they are going to enjoy it. OK? They are going to enjoy it. They do nothing for us.”
