Playa del Carmen shooting has mayor vowing zero tolerance

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Another shooting took place near the tourist area of central Playa del Carmen early Monday morning that has the city’s mayor vowing zero tolerance.

At approximately 4:20 a.m., a man sitting at a table was shot point-blank and killed while a second man was seriously injured. Reports say an armed man entered the establishment La Jarra at 4:20 a.m. when he walked up to the table and shot the two men.

The shooter then fled the bar on foot and has yet to be apprehended.

The bar, which is located on Avenida 10 between 10 and 12 streets, was operating after hours. In Playa del Carmen, bars must be vacated by all patrons and staff by 4:00 a.m.

On-duty police who were patrolling the area at the time of the murder have since been released from duty by the city of Playa del Carmen. The reason for their dismissal was failing to report the illegally open establishment.

The city’s mayor, Cristina Torres Gómez, has vowed zero tolerance in regard to public security incompetence.
