President-elect of Mexico says he maintains communication with US

Mexico City, Mexico — President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador, says that he and US president Donald Trump have maintained communication over the months and that agreements are being reached.

He says that Trump has been respectful regarding the country’s independence and its people.

“Donald Trump has treated us in a respectful way, he said. “I have spoken with him by telephone about free trade, about the migratory issue and some agreements are being reached,” he added.

Although he did not specify what type of agreements are being reached with Trump, the president-elect said that they have been “with respect to our independence and our sovereignty, careful not to humiliate our people.”

In thanking authorities of the neighboring state of Arizona who attended a recent event of his, López Obrador stressed that the relationship with the northern country has been very good saying, “We do not want to be distant neighbors,” noting friendship between the people and government of the United States and Mexico is necessary.
