Senate proposes to legislate beekeeping in Mexico

Mérida, Yucatan — Yucatan senators have presented an initiative to create a federal law on beekeeping activities in Mexico.

Members of the National Action Party say that Mexico lacks legislation despite requiring it to occupy the sixth place in production and the third in world in regard to honey exports.

“In 2016, just over 29,000 tons of honey was exported with a value of $93.7 million USD ,” said Senator Rosa Adriana Díaz Lizama, specifying that among the main producing entities are Yucatan, with 10,000 tons and Campeche who produces 7,500 tons among other states.

The initiative was presented by the senator to create a General Law of Protection, Conservation and Apiculture Promotion to ensure beekeeping in the various states of Mexico.
