Seven dead, nine injured after truck driver loses control

Tuxtla, Gutierrez, Chiapas — An accident has left seven people dead and nine wounded in La Pachota, in the west of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas.

According to local media, state police were monitoring a teachers’ protest when the driver of a heavy truck lost control and rammed several cars. He also hit food stalls, other businesses and police officers as well as a CFE light post.

A few hundred meters from where the accident took place were a group of teachers and state police.

The area was cordoned off by the State Preventive Police, the Mexican Army and Federal Police. In addition, the Red Cross firefighters and rescue staff provided assistance.

According to the Secretaries of Public Safety and Civil Protection, of the seven people who lost their lives, five died in the area of the accident. Two others died at hospital.

Among the dead are Cristina Montes Flores, Marco Antonio Morales Flores and Fidencio Hernández Gómez.

Of the nine injured, five are in the hospital. The injured include seven children aged 10 to 2 and two adult women.

The driver of the truck was arrested.
