Salamanca, Guanajuato — Six policemen were ambushed and killed by a group of armed men in the city of Salamanca, Guanajuato.
The tragedy occurred Friday along the roadway of Avenida Sol near Puente Negro, a few meters away from a primary school.
According to reports, two patrol cars were parked along the roadway watching for illegal vehicles when they were gunned down. Five of the six officers died at the scene, while the sixth died after being rushed to a regional hospital.
Reports say that armed men in two pickup trucks opened fire on the unsuspecting policemen, causing panic and chaos among nearby residents.
Elements of the Military Police, Public Security Forces of the State, federal and ministerial police began an operation in search for the armed men at Ordeña, Valle de Santiago and the exit to Celaya, however the men apparently managed to escape.
The deceased have been identified as Vicente Bueno Zavala, Victorino Sánchez García, José Luis Fernández González, Martín Contreras Pérez, Hector Rivera Ornelas and José Manuel Gutiérrez González, who died in the Regional General Hospital.
On Thursday, the commander of the Municipal Police of Valle de Santiago, Juan Carlos Garcia Garcia, was also killed.
Members of organized crime have launched threats against police in the municipalities of Celaya, Salamanca, Silao, León and Irapuato. According to the newspaper Reforma, 34 police officers have been killed so far this year in the state.
