Soldier dies stopping thieves from robbing public bus

State of Mexico — An off-duty soldier with the the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) died over the weekend after thwarting an assault on a public bus.

The incident occurred at 10:30 a.m. on the Mexico Puebla Freeway when the soldier intercepted an attempted robbery of passengers on a public bus killing the two thieves.

However, the soldier was also shot. The deceased solider has been identified as Raúl Santander Hernández, 44 years old, assigned to the Military Base of Santa Lucia in Tecámac.

On board the bus police found a 38-gauge revolver that was used to threaten passengers. Police also found a .40-caliber pistol, owned by the Army’s cash.

The zone was cordoned off, while the arrival of experts from the Mexican prosecutor’s office waited for the first investigations on the site.
