Tulum businessman shot dead sitting in restaurant

Tulum, Q.R. — Current business owner and past Directorate of Revenue in both Tulum and Playa del Carmen was shot to death at a restaurant in Tulum Wednesday night.

José Ricardo Suárez Beltrán who was the director of Revenue in Tulum and also in Playa del Carmen for many years, was shot while inside a restaurant only a few meters from city hall. Suárez Beltrán is the owner of Tulum club, Raíces.

According to witnesses, two men approached the table where the businessman sat to supervise the service of his club, and without saying anything, they shot him at point-blank range and then slipped out of the club on foot. The shooting took place around 11:00 p.m.

The two alleged assassins were detained almost immediately when they tried to go unnoticed among the crowd. According to the preliminary report, two .9 mm caliber weapons were confiscated upon arrest of the two men who have been identified as a 25-year-old from Tabasco and a 41-year-old man from Mexico City.

Ricardo Suárez was also the owner of La Santanera, a bar located in the tourist area of Playa del Carmen. According to local media reports La Santanera closed at the beginning of February last year. Just two weeks after the shooting of the Blue Parrot which was said to be related to organized crime.
