US secretary of state lands in Mexico City for talks

Mexico City, Mexico — United States Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo, arrived at at the Presidential Hangar at the International Airport of Mexico City earlier this morning.

Pompeo, who was accompanied by the secretaries of the Treasury, Steven Mnuchin of Internal Security, Kirstjen Nielsen and the senior adviser to the president of the United States, Jared Kushner, was received by personnel from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Today US officials will meet with president Enrique Peña Nieto, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Luis Videgaray and president-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador to discuss various issues on the bilateral agenda.

Parties of the private meeting will discuss three central points including migration, security and the Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The future secretaries of Foreign Affairs, Governance, Finance, Economy and Public Safety, Marcelo Ebrard, Olga Sanchez Cordero, Carlos Urzua, Graciela Márquez and Alfonso Durazo will also attend the meeting.

President-elect, Jesus Seade, the next chief negotiator of the FTA along with Alicia Bárcena, nominated to be Mexico’s representative to the United Nations, are also expected to be in attendance.
