Mexico City, Mexico — The former director of the Altiplano, Valentín Cárdenas, who was arrested for the escape of Joaquín Guzmán, otherwise known as El Chapo, has been released.
Due to lack of evidence, the Sixth Unitary Court of the State of Mexico ordered the release of Valentín Cárdenas Lerma, who has been locked up in the high security prison of the Altiplano for the escape of Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán three years ago.
Magistrate Olga María Josefina Ojeda Arellano, head of the Sixth Unitary Court of the Second Circuit, ordered the former official’s freedom “for lack of elements to prosecute,” despite the fact that the Attorney General’s Office accused him of the crime of evasion of prisoners.
The judgement can still be challenged. El Chapo remains in a US prison.
