Veracruz, Mexico — A passenger bus headed from Puebla to El Jobo, Veracruz, overturned early Saturday morning on the Córdoba-Veracruz highway leaving at least 34 people injured, three of them seriously, local authorities reported.
They added that the accident, which happened at 3:50 a.m., occurred after the driver apparently fell asleep and lost control of the unit. The bus overturned, landing on its left side.
Personnel from Civil Protection,and Public Security arrived on scene along with police and ambulances. The wounded were taken to several hospitals in the area for medical attention.
The bus with 40 passengers on board left the city of Puebla for the town of El Jobo in the municipality of Tlapacoyan, Veracruz.
Vehicular traffic was affected for more than four hours. The driver of the bus escaped from the scene.
